MVEC Asset Tracker – Privacy Policy
Maquoketa Valley Rural Electric Cooperative (MVEC) · Effective October 15, 2026
This policy covers the MVEC Asset Tracker app ("the app"). The app runs only on iPhones and iPads that MVEC owns and manages, and that it issues to its employees and contractors. It is not available to the public and is not meant for children. MVEC's general privacy policy covers the MVEC website and the MVlink Managed WiFi app. This page covers the Asset Tracker app.
1. What the app collects
Information | Details |
Precise location | Latitude, longitude, accuracy, altitude, speed, direction of travel and the time of each reading, from the device's location services. |
Device identity | The device's serial number (set by MVEC's device management), and the MVEC truck the device is assigned to, if any. |
Technical status | Battery level and charging state, Low Power Mode, the app's location permission setting, app and iOS version, network type (Wi-Fi, cellular or none), and technical error codes. |
Location reporting does not collect names, contacts, messages, photos, browsing history, data from other apps, microphone or camera content, or health data. Authorized service names and addresses may be present in the offline maps described below. It does not require a personal user account. It does not score driving, productivity or performance.
Offline field maps and visit lists
MVEC provides authorized offline map packages containing local roads, infrastructure layers and service locations, including selected member identifiers, names and service addresses. These packages are stored on the managed device. The app can import or accept pasted member numbers, meter numbers and map locations, and save named visit lists, completion status and notes locally on that device. These lookups, visit lists and notes are not automatically uploaded to the tracking server or an outside mapping service. If a user exports a visit backup, a copy is saved or shared to the destination chosen in the operating system's file controls. Exported files are subject to MVEC's handling rules and the chosen storage destination's protections.
The Field Map displays downloaded MVEC roads and layers on the device, and authorized fleet positions received from MVEC. Its My location control requests a foreground location fix. Hiding the Vehicles layer does not stop the device's separately configured location reporting.
2. When it collects
The app uses the device's location services to record its location in the background when location permission is set to Always, including when the app is not open. Available readings depend on the device's location hardware and iOS services. iOS shows a location indicator while this happens and sends its own periodic reminders. The app cannot hide them. The location permission can be seen and changed at any time in the device's Settings.
3. Why MVEC uses it
• To locate MVEC vehicles and equipment for dispatch, outage response and crew coordination.
• For safety: to find crews and vehicles quickly in an emergency.
• To recover lost or stolen equipment.
• To keep the devices and the app working (the technical status). MVEC does not use this information for advertising, does not sell it, and does not use it to track anyone across other companies' apps or websites.
4. Who can see it
• Authorized MVEC staff through MVEC's fleet dashboard. Every look at a device's location history and every export is recorded in an audit log.
• MVEC's internal dispatch and mapping systems receive the current position of each MVEC truck.
• Other MVEC devices with the app can see the current position of MVEC's trucks on the app's Fleet Map. A phone or tablet's own position appears there only when MVEC uses that device as the location source for a truck.
• MVEC may disclose information when required by law or legal process, or when needed to protect the safety of people or property. The information is stored on MVEC's own servers, not with an outside tracking service. Maps in the Field Map are displayed from the downloaded local map package.
5. How long it is kept
• Offline maps, visit lists and notes: stored locally until removed, replaced or the app/device is erased. The app keeps up to 50 recent lists and asks the user to manage capacity; exported backups remain wherever the user saved them.
• Location history: deleted automatically after 90 days.
• Technical status reports: deleted automatically after 30 days.
• Audit records of who viewed or exported location data: kept for 2 years. When a device is taken out of service, MVEC can delete its stored location history. Copies of truck positions in MVEC's internal dispatch systems are kept under MVEC's record-keeping practices.
6. Your choices and requests
If you carry an MVEC device with the app and want to know what was recorded about it, or want records corrected or deleted where MVEC is not required to keep them, contact MVEC using the details below. Because these are company-owned devices used for MVEC's operations, the app's location reporting is part of the device's job setup.
7. Security
Information is sent from the device to MVEC's servers over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Each device proves its identity with a key kept in the device's secure hardware. Access to the dashboard is limited to authorized MVEC staff.
