Heat:  Electric Versus LP Gas

We continue to receive calls from members  who want to understand the costs to heat with electricity as they manage the supply and demand of LP gas (propane) this winter.

Many members are choosing to utilize portable electric heaters as a means of saving on their LP use.  While these heaters have their place taking the chill out of the room you are in, they are not designed for long-term, whole home use.  Don’t be misled about their operational costs.  A watt is a watt so the cost of your heater doesn’t make it more efficient than a lower cost unit.  One electric (space) heater, operating 24 hours per day, could add over $100 to your next electric bill.

If you are concerned about the potential for a high energy bill, visit the My Account section of our website where you can view and track your energy use and estimate your next bill.

A member with a high efficiency gas furnace will find electric heat a better value when LP costs exceed $2 to $2.50/gallon.  Exact savings depends on the number of kilowatt-hours you use and the efficiency level of your furnace.

As always, we are here to help you with knowledgeable staff, energy assessments and incentives to make your home comfortable, energy efficient and affordable.
